Throwback to the 2015?? Illinois chapter AGS meeting at Forest Park Library then Forest Home Cemetery!
I was just telling a friend about the meeting and what a trip it was! During a very serious speech given by a head of a restoration company, two hooligans in the audience were talking and goofing like kids in church!! Neither of those two are with us anymore.
John Martine and Mark Rogovin. 👼
The very serious gentlemen actually scolded them for talking 🤣 SOOO funny! I hope the two of them are up there causing trouble as usual!!!
The end of that day was pretty funny too. A large group of us stayed a little to long and they locked us in the cemetery! It really wasn't a big deal as Mark was right down the street with the key and came to our rescue quickly. Before anyone gets their knickers in a knot LOL The cemetery knew we were there and had access to Mark so they had told us we could stay pretty much as long as we liked!
It was great day, great memories with great friends ❤️

Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland, Oh
John Davis Rockefeller Sr. was an American Businessman and Philanthropist. He is one of the wealthiest men in modern history having been the firs to reach billionaire status. By the time he was twenty years old he was involved in Oil Refining and opened The Standard Oil Company in 1847 in Cleveland, Ohio.
As gas and kerosene usage grew so did Rockefellers wealth. By 1900 he owned 90% of Americas Oil making him the richest man in the country.
In 1911 the supreme court ruled that Standard Oil needed to be dismantled due to violations of federal antitrust laws. The company was split into 34 separate entities. Two of these companies became ExxonMobil and Chevron Corporation, each remains among the largest companies by revenue worldwide.
By 1913 he was reportedly worth 900 million dollars.
Rockefeller spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement in New York defining the structure of modern philanthropy with other industrialists.
His fortune was used on the "systematic approach of targeted philanthropy through the creation of foundations that supported medicine, education, and scientific research" (quote from Wikipedia)
He died at age 97 on May 27, 1937, in his home in Florida. He is buried along with many members of his family in Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.

The public vault at Congressional Cemetery, Washington DC

This Vault was built between 1832 and 1834. A total of $2800 was appropriated by the United States Congress during this time to build the structure to store bodies of government officials and members of the public before burial.
This was due to a need for a space for those who died in DC while working. During that time we did not have embalming and other modern funerary customs and procedures. Many of the men in Congress and government worked here in DC but did not live here. They came from all over the country. Transportation of a body was expensive and took a long time in those days as well. So they needed a place to store the bodies until arrangements could be made.
Approximately 4600 individuals have been temporarily interred in the vault, including three US presidents, John Quincy Adams, William Henry Harrison, and Zachary Taylor..
First lady Dolly Madison was the longest interment having been there from July 16th, 1849 to February 10th, 1852.
Use of the temporary space was free to public officials and charged $5 to the general public the temporary storage of the body. Part of these fees went towards the upkeep of the cemetery and the church associated with it.
Legend says that Lewis Powell spent the night in the vault while avoiding capture for his involvement in the Lincoln assassination.
In June of 1969 The vault was listed on the national register of historic places and made a national historic landmark in 2011.

an amazing program at Congressional Cemetery, where you can adopt a plot. You can adopt an older plot that no one takes care of anymore and you take on the responsibility of caring for it. I think it's an amazing idea to encourage continued Care of older historic cemeteries!

This tiny bedstead marker sits on a child's grave in a very old, small cemetery a few hours southwest of Chicago.
A bedstead headstone was commonly used to mark the grave of an infant or small child symbolizing the "cradle to grave" transition.
A bed grave marker also represents "returning home" to heaven or home and rest.

Forest Park, IL

Known as the Village of Cemeteries, Forest Park, Il is famously known for being home to more dead people than living! 800,000 interments in over 200 small cemeteries makes the dead to living ratio about 30 to 1!
This mausoleum is the resting place of Chicago native and pioneer radio manufacturer William Grunow.
Grunow was a partner in the Majestic Radio Company where he made several million dollars but lost most of after being ousted from Majestic.
He is said to have sold a large property and invested the profit in Val-O-Will Farms Inc., a company that raised chickens! The endeavor was successful, and he regained some of the wealth he had lost.
William died mysteriously in 1951 at the age of 58. His nude, lifeless body was found lying in a room on the 24th floor of the Stephens Hotel in Chicago, with a minor laceration on his head. Grunow was was a frequent guest at the hotel for business meetings. Shortly after midnight one night in July 1951, an anonymous woman made a call to the hotel doctor just after midnight stating franticly that a man was having a heart attack and to please hurry up to the room. By the time the doctor arrived the woman had disappeared. Grunow had indeed had a heart attack. According to his wife he had been suffering from a heart ailment for some time.
The mausoleum pictured here includes two life sized statues on either side. On the left is the Greek God Mercury with "The spirit of Commerce" at the bottom of the statue.
On the right is the Goddess of victory, Nike. The words "The spirit of Radio" rest at her feet.
Two large lions flank the beginning of the walkway to the entrance. The lions in funerary symbolism stand for the power of god. They are there to guard and protect against evil spirits in the passageway to the next life.
